Recently it came to my attention that a friend of mine has released a new book titled "How I Got Him to Marry Me: 50 True Stories". It is a collection of stories put together by Cherise Kelley. Having worked with Cherise on a few projects, I know her to be a prolific writer with the highest of standards. I expect nothing less from her book. Check out the exerpt below so you know what to expect.
"Scott and I met at the airport. It was December, but I was coming from Los Angeles where it was warm, so I only had on shorts and a T shirt. I was cold. I looked around for someone wearing a coat that I could borrow for a few minutes, just to warm up. I saw Scott sitting there wearing a down parka that we've kept these 20 years.
"Could I borrow your coat for a minute, just to warm up?"
Wouldn't you know, it turned out we were on the same flight. He switched seats so he could sit next to me and get his coat back. He was stationed 1,000 miles away, in the US Navy, coming home on leave to see his parents. He asked me out, but I explained I had a boyfriend. He asked if I would be his pen pal, and that I agreed to, you know, just to support the troops.
Over the next year, we wrote back and forth often. After my boyfriend dumped me on my 30th birthday, Scott and I started talking on the phone every evening, for hours. This was 1993, when you still paid long distance charges. We each paid a $500 phone bill every month! Whenever he came home on leave, we would go out. When he asked me to be his girlfriend, I surprised him by saying, "No." We were on the phone, as we were every night. I could tell he was hurt, but since we were on the phone and not together in person, we had to talk, and that was a good thing. I explained, "I'm 30 years old. I've already had the last boyfriend I am ever going to have. In the future, I am going to have a husband, not a boyfriend."
